In 1814, long after Kagen’s death, a five volume picture book of his art was published. The book was entitled Fukuzensai Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Fukuzensai). The eighteen pictures of flowers/fruits and (or) birds included in the book are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Kagen was influenced by Chinese painting styles in which the shape of an object was drawn using only a partial black outline. A complete black outline was typical of earlier Japanese art.
